May in Waimea is a thing of beauty, from the China blue sky filled with cotton ball clouds to the stamping horses, festooned with flowers for their turn down the highway in the May Day pageants. The winter winds have swept out of town, leaving us wide-eyed with wonder at the intensity of the colors and smells around us. Folks are stopping still in the parking lots, with arms full of bags and kids tugging at their legs. They are looking around at the emerald hills and shaking their heads in amazement. It is so very beautiful in Waimea in May!

Beauty is one of those words we use often but may not truly appreciate. After all, there is beauty all around us when we live in a place like Waimea, where the landscape seems almost poetic in its soft rhythms and bright contrasts. We know the beauty of a daughter’s quiet contemplations and a son’s joyful dash across the beach to the thundering embrace of the surf. We know the beauty of a husband’s hands, as work and years and weather scribe the seasons upon them. We know the beauty of a wife’s determined love and enduring admiration. We know the beauty of Grace all around us if we but pause to see.

Years ago I was asked to speak a memorial gathering at the Waimea Nature Park on a beautiful summer day, and the words were so easy to find:

“Take a minute to look around you now at the intense beauty of our surroundings, and I mean … really look around you now. We have the gentle folds of the ancient Kohalas to the north, beckoning us to set forth into the breathtaking beauty of the rainforest. We have the muscular shoulders of Mauna Kea to the south, challenging us to venture up into the highlands, where the air is clear and cold, and we can see the moving shadows of clouds running over the saddle lands of Waimea far below. And all around us is our great mother, the sea. If love could be expressed as landscape, this surely is what love would look like!”

This month we should take a few moments to realize the deeper implications of beauty in our lives and appreciate the renovation it brings to our souls. For a hundred years or so our civilization has been experimenting with the idea that science and technology can somehow replace the idea that God’s fingerprints are all over the natural wonders of the universe. Some folks get pretty adamant about this sort of thing, but I keep running up against … beauty.

Have you ever been swept away by the sighing of the palms, the crashing of the surf and the sparkling laughter of kids on the beach? Have you ever listened to the roar of a rain forest waterfall when your attention was called up to the piping of a bright red bird high in the canopy above? Have you sat mesmerized by a rich avalanche of music pouring out of the windows of an old house in the quiet of a Sunday afternoon? Have you jumped to your feet to applaud a musician that has just soared up, up and away with your heart in hand?

Beauty and music are just two of the proofs that God is with us, is in us and somehow loves us so much that we were given this incredible place to live.

May your May be more than you dreamed it could be!
